The South Florida Muslim Federation in conjunction with Shepard Broad School of Law (NSU Law) and International Muslim Association at Nova (NSU Iman) held a presentation on Shariah Law on Friday, 11/12/2021. The purpose of this presentation was to convey authentic information and demystify the concept of Sharia law which is grossly misunderstood by many Americans.

The guest speaker, Imam Azhar Subedar, provided an elaborate and enlightening overview of the concept of Shariah Law with examples from daily life to help make the understanding easier. He explained that as opposed to the common misconception, Shariah was not a collection of draconian laws focused on jihad or subjugation of women but a way of life based on the teachings of Quran and Sunnah of Prophet (PBUH). The other two main sources of Shariah Law are consensus  and analogy. He emphasized that in order to fully deconstruct and comprehend the concept, religion must be separated from cultural influences and practices.

Imam Subedar is a motivational orator, advocate and teacher and  currently serving as the Imam (spiritual leader) at Plano Masjid, Plano, Texas. He was the first imam to give opening prayer at the Florida State Legislature in 2016, and is currently writing a book about Sharia. He also regularly visits South Florida to hold lectures and community meetings. Additionally, he does a virtual weekly live session for SFL Muslim Federation.

During his visit to SFL, he also met with community members at Masjid Jamaat Al-Mumineen following a Jummah Khutbah and Islamic Center of Coral Springs during a family night. He also met with the imams of local masajid to discuss ways which can help strengthen the community.
